CCSSO’s Modernization and Future Readiness Initiative

CCSSO’s Modernization and Future Readiness Initiative is designed to provide state education agencies (SEAs) with the capacity, time and resources to identify and develop innovative solutions to their data system needs.

SEAs engaged in the initiative can gain insight into the importance of interoperability and privacy, developing formal strategies and ensuring transparency into technology and data usage. The initiative also highlights the significance of equity as a core principle in procurement processes and policies.

The initiative focuses on six domains: Leadership/Vision, Governance, Technology and Infrastructure Landscape, Procurement, Implementation Fidelity and Privacy.

Each state in the initiative assesses its processes, procedures and infrastructure supporting the enterprise data and technology systems against a series of benchmarks and creates individualized implementation plans to prioritize growth and maturity in areas most important for the state.

The initiative’s first cohort of California, Iowa, Massachusetts and Nebraska were joined in December 2022 by Delaware, Georgia, Maine, Maryland, Mississippi, Nevada, South Carolina, and Vermont.

Importantly, this initiative brings together state and district perspectives to build the education data system of the future. Participating organizations in this initiative are the Council of the Great City School (CGCS), the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN), the State Education Technology Directors Association (SETDA) and Project Unicorn.
