The North Dakota Department of Public Instruction (NDDPI) under State Superintendent Kirsten Baesler’s leadership invested pandemic relief funds to develop a comprehensive, multipronged approach to bolster the educator workforce. In 2021-2022, the state received approval from the U.S. Department of Labor on a Teacher Registered Apprenticeship Program that provides supervised, on-the-job training for educators while they obtain credentials required to advance their careers. Additionally, in 2023 the Labor Department designated North Dakota as the first state with a principal apprenticeship program, which provides tuition assistance for educators who want to earn a master’s degree in educational leadership.
